ABOUT TMAC
From a young age, I’ve always been passionate about fitness and healthy living. But amazingly my initial path certainly didn’t take me directly there. I actually came from a career in finance! Money wasn’t my first or true passion. But like so many of us, we get locked in what feels like a commitment to a path of perceived security, and then off we go down that road. My story, like so many others, is no different in this way.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a major in Finance and a minor in Management Information Systems from Villanova University, I came to New York City and worked on Wall Street at Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan as an institutional portfolio manager. After six years in finance, becoming a CFA (Certified Financial Analyst) Charterholder, rising up the ranks, and even being groomed as a Wall Street leader I realized it was every moneymakers dream, but not mine. In fact the entire time I remained in conflict about what I really wanted to do. I was repressively sad about my life. My practical mind kept me locked in where I was, but my heart kept taking me back to my natural physical passion for exercise. As a result I became so efficient at what I was doing that, while everyone else around me was stuck at work burning the proverbial midnight oil either because they genuinely had to so they could complete their work or simply in faux fashion to impress the bosses, I got done what I had to early and headed straight for the gym! That is, unless I made it to the gym that morning. The real heaven for me were my intense running sessions, climbing hills, getting outside when I could, weight training, and doing hard circuits. That was my true bliss.
Gradually this irrepressible passion just kept surging up inside me with greater intensity to the point I could no longer ignore or suppress it. I took stock of my situation.
There I was competitive in money and making plenty of it. Yet it left me feeling so empty and unfulfilled. Looking back at the time prior, I had been joyfully competitive in everything from soccer, to softball, and track and field coupled with lifelong interests in dance, figure skating, golf, tennis, and skiing. Yet chasing money, even at it’s most successful, seemed to pale in comparison to the intrinsic rewards of the passion I found for my physical life.
I decided I needed to find myself again. It was either be true to myself, or risk losing my happiness. This was a profoundly difficult decision. Walking away from a life of success in the world of money to go to what? Well, I set out to seek the answer to that question and, in the process, found it.
I got Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and began working in the fitness industry teaching cycling classes at Equinox, New York Health and Racquet and Crunch Fitness. Eventually it was the right time and I bit the proverbial bullet, quit my job, and led a new career as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor. I began training clients as a Tier 3 trainer at Equinox in New York. Soon after, I moved out of Manhattan to Connecticut where I continue to teach group fitness classes and work with individuals, pairs, and groups of all sizes.
Overall my physical life and training skills go well beyond the confines of the fitness center. Even so, the gym was where I really learned my craft of changing and reshaping the body. Looking back I guess all that work in finance was helpful in many ways. One thing I learned about finance is that it’s clear whether you won or lost at the end of the day. Either I made money for my clients and thus won, or lost money for them and failed. There’s no faking that. It is what it is. In that same vein, I would seek to hone my skills as the highest level trainer I could be in pursuit of physical excellence for my clients. Setting out with the same drive and commitment I did when I pursued a career on Wall Street, I set out to achieve some pretty lofty standards. Working side-by-side and interning with some of the greatest minds and bodies in fitness, I learned how it’s really done by the very best. My direct exposure to real professional athletes preparing for world-class competition and Hollywood stars getting ready for movies and Broadway shows was essential to my growth and development as a trainer.
It’s those experiences and that same standard of excellence that I bring back to my clients. I give it my all. I want to inspire them. I want to help them, guide them, and celebrate their successes with them. I want them to savor the same passion and zest for the physical life that has been such a gift for me. It is the precious, life-changing, life saving gift that I feel I’m here on this earth to give to others. So I’m finally irrepressibly happy, and what it really comes down to is that it’s that same happiness I share.
