Where did the summer go? I can't believe the kids are off to school again AND my, once little baby, Jackson is now off to Kindergarten!! This summer has been as enjoyable and as relaxing as always for me, as I hope it's been for most of you. My summers are filled with vacations, weekend get-aways and a lot of excuses for family, friends, get-togethers and parties. During these times, the workouts are amazing because I can get outside more, enjoy the sun, and most importantly, rest more. But now it's back to the proverbial "grind". Whether you're a working stiff, like me, or a busy mom and homemaker, like me, it can be tough to do your duty yet still keep up the hard workouts. Here's where it gets tough. Not letting up like this when times get busy and stressful sometimes causes me to feel fatigued and even exhausted at times. After a long stint back in action, I definitely feel like I need a rest from juggling it all. Even so, I always have to remind myself how important rest and recovery is for the body, and to back off when it's time. It's critical to not only avoid overtraining, but also to repair, rebuild and strengthen your muscles especially during times when your energy is pulled in so many different directions. As the school year marks the unofficial end of summer and beginning of a new season, while we re-dedicate ourselves to our regular routine, let's not lose sight of the fact that proper rest is needed along the way. Get to sleep extra early one night, take a day off from training when you've been super-consistent, and definitely listen to your body when you're feeling a little tapped so you can dial it back just a little. It's a long haul to next summer, so workout consistently and hard, and be smart about it. But never forget, when it is time to train...it's CRUSH TIME!
