Happy Holiday's and Happy New Year from TMACFIT! You're probably thinking I lost my mind over the holidays and went off on an egg nog binge with the words you just read. But I'm totally egg nog-free and serious. I actually want you to set a goal. In fact, I want you to set many goals throughout the year. We know everyone sets new goals come the new year. So I want to give you one of my secrets. Most people I know set great goals for the year that usually center around weight loss or healthier eating and living habits. The goal is usually a statement such as "I'm going to loose 10lbs this year." What a great goal in theory! But there are many problems with this goal. If someone were to say that to me, I can almost guarantee you they won't reach their goal by the end of the year. The trick to setting goals is to set near-term goals first. For example, this theoretical person could change their goal to, "I'm going to loose 2 lbs this month." By making a shorter-term attainable goal, you're setting yourself up for success. You'll be more inclined to come up with a plan to achieve that goal, and that will be a focus for the next month. If you think you have 12 months to get this done, what's the rush or urgency to make any progress the first few months? You'll still have plenty of time... right? The great thing about goals like this is that they feed themselves. Once you reach your goal for the month, you'll be more motivated to repeat the habits that helped you to accomplish what you set out to, and you'll set a new goal. Perhaps the next month, this person would want to loose another 2 lbs. If your short-term goals don't work out, don't worry! That's the best part about setting shorter-term goals. If this person only lost one pound, they should try to loose another pound the next month or they can retool their strategy and work to loose 2 lbs the following month. My point is that if you wait until 2018 to be accountable for your actions and measure your results, you'll just find out you're off the mark and have no time to correct your habits to reach your goal. Even worse, it's been a whole year and at that point, who knows what the reason for not meeting your goal is? The laundry list of excuses becomes endless. I believe this is why we have so many people making the same goals for themselves year in and year out. So my little trick you can go put it to use is to focus on smaller goals so we can far EXCEED our longer term goals we have for ourselves and take that many more steps closer to becoming the best version of ourselves! 2017 is CRUSH TIME!!!
